Your Facilitators
John Millett, Associate Addiction Counsellor, MA
As John’s Masters degree thesis, he wrote a manual that is an approach to recovery called T.H.O.R. (Time to Hammer Out Recovery), which will be utilized in the program. John utilizes both TTM (Transtheoretical Model of Behavioral Change) and Motivational Interviewing in his treatment approaches.
John's competencies come from years of training and experience. He was born in London, England in the late 50s, experiencing the cultural tensions of being a son to an Irish father and English mother. He served in the Canadian Armed Forces during the Cold War Era as a Stoker (marine engineer), aboard Canadian Destroyers. He became a problematic drinker in the military, and it remained with him as he reintegrated as a civilian. He had a spiritual awakening that set his life course towards sobriety and found his call to be a support in the liberation of others captured by substance use.
John is an Ordained Minister, Life Coach and Chaplain, has extensive training in addiction recovery, and is licensed as an Associate Addiction Counsellor with the Canadian Addiction Counsellors Certification Federation. He has served as a Recovery Support Worker with AHS, in-patient psychiatry, at St. Therese Hospital, as a one-to-one worker, group therapy facilitator and Recreational Therapist. John co-led Celebrate Recovery for several years. He is passionate about music, physical fitness, and Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

Grief Recovery Support Group FALL 2025
Begins Monday, October 20th, 2025 - December 8th, 2025
Time: 6:30pm - 8:30 pm
Location: Parkland Wellness Centre, 180 Century Rd, Spruce Grove, AB

Loss and grief is a deeply painful, lonely, and frequently isolating experience. We often feel unprepared and ill-equipped to deal with our emotions and experiences with any form of loss. Most of us have not been taught how to heal our emotional pain after loss. Rather, we are told well-meaning myths and misinformation such as to “move on”, “keep busy”, “be strong”, and “time will heal” which often keeps us stuck or isolated in our pain.

Among the many normal reactions after loss, we may experience emotional and physical exhaustion, reduced concentration, numbness, isolation, changes in eating and sleeping, and a rollercoaster of emotional energy. The hopeful news is that grief does not have to be an experience of lifelong suffering. There are actionable tools that can help you to move beyond the pain and heal your heart.

The Grief Recovery Method is an evidence-based program that helps bring hope to people around the world. During the 8 weeks of the program, we will take several small intentional actions to move through the pain of loss and grieving, become more present, and recapture a sense of meaning and purpose.

*PLEASE NOTE* This group is offered to residents of the Tri Region(Spruce Grove, Stony Plain, Parkland County. If once we have all tri region residents registered and have openings, we may be able to include outside residents.
